Somerset Treatment Services Drug and Alcohol Abuse Programs and Related Services
  • Clinical Chemical Dependency Services: substance abuse assessments, individual therapy, and family therapy.

  • Group Therapy Services: Includes Early Education, Relapse Prevention, Women's Treatment, MICA (Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser), and Adolescent Groups

  • Intensive Outpatient Program: specialized treatment provided 3 days per week, 3 hours per day, including educational and therapeutic groups and individual services. These groups are held during evening hours.

  • Methadone Treatment: outpatient detoxification and methadone maintenance services provided in cooperation with Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.

  • Alcohol Education Program: specialized workshops designed to address issues for a variety of groups, including parents, young adults, senior citizens, and many others.

  • Intoxicated Driver Resource Center (IDRC) Treatment Program: an extensive 16-week alcohol education series, including individual and group counseling, for anyone with one or more DWI convictions.

  • Comprehensive Community Psychiatric Services: assessments and follow-up for indigent clients from Somerset County, provided in collaboration with Catholic Charities, Family and Community Services, and the Resource Center for Women and Their Families.

  • Alternatives to Incarceration: educational and therapeutic interventions in a structured environment for youth confronting incarceration, provided with Middle Earth, Somerset Vocational-Technical Schools, Family and Community Services, and the Somerset County Youth Services.

  • CARE (Comprehensive Addictions Recovery and Evaluation) Program (Formerly the DAAY Program)- a collaborative program, involving three other agencies, which provides a continuum of services to youth who are involved in the criminal justice system. The partner agencies are Catholic Charities, Daytop, and Great Expectations. Services range from evaluations through various levels of outpatient services to referral for inpatient care.
Prevention Services

Intensive on-site services for high-risk youth and families, utilizing science-based program models. Services are provided in connection with Family and Community Services and the Resource Center for Women and Their Families. These programs are provided at the agency as well as at local community organizations whose populations are appropriate for service delivery.
  • Strengthening Families: a fourteen-week program for parents and children ages 5-12. This program seeks to build family communication and relationships though various exercises with the children and parents separately and together. Meals are provided to the participating families. This service is provided at no charge to the families.

  • Community-Based Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention: Workshops (individual sessions or a series of workshops) are tailored to meet the needs of any community group requesting this service. Seminars are provided at the requesting group's location. Topics inlcude various aspects of substance abuse and related issues. There are no fees charged for this service. Recipient groups must be based in Somerset County.
HIV Services
  • Testing: free HIV testing with pre- and post-test counseling for enrolled clients.

  • Support Group: group services, including meals and activities, for any individual infected by HIV who has been screened by the HIV Case Manager. No fees are charged for this group.

  • Case Management: needs assessment, in-home services, referrals, and individual care are provided at no charge to clients.

  • HIV Emergency Funds: available to persons living with HIV/AIDS.

  • HIV-Specific Drug Treatment: comprehensive out-patient services, including methadone treatment, provided to anyone in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties living with HIV or AIDS (designed for clients eligible for Ryan White services).

How Can Someone Apply for Services ?

Counselors will take brief information over the phone and, if you wish, schedule an appointment, usually within several days. All services provided by Somerset Treatment Services are totally confidential, from the very first phone call. No information can be released without your signed consent.

We ask you to bring in proof of income when you come for your first visit (Pay stub, Medicaid card, income tax forms, insurance information, disability or other entitlement documentation, etc.). This will help us determine your sliding scale status, Medicaid eligibility, etc.

Who Is Eligible to receive Services?

These services are offered to anyone who thinks they may have a problem related to alcohol or drugs or needs assistance with HIV-related issues, or is referred by someone who believes they may have a problem. While services may be offered to family members or significant others, it is recommended that the person seeking service information or assistance make the initial contact, wherever possible. Staff members are more than willing to respond to questions from family members or significant others, as needed. If there is a serious medical or psychiatric issue involved ( e.g., overdose or suicide attempt), we strongly recommend that you seek immediate attention through your local hospital. The number for Somerset Medical Center is 685-2200. The number for PESS (Psychiatric Emergency Screening Services) is 526-4100.

What Treatment Services Are Offered to Youth?

The continuum of CARE that will be afforded to youth assessed to require chemical dependency treatment includes: outpatient services (with varying degrees of intensity available), intensive outpatient services, case management services, therapeutic housing services for pregnant youth, and residential treatment. All service providers will include a family component within their treatment modalities. Referral sources can contact the lead agency, Somerset Treatment Services at (908) 722-1232 to make a referral. A telephone screening will be made to determine eligibility. If the youth is deemed appropriate for services, s/he will be asked to contact STS to arrange an appointment.

What Are The Fees For This Program?

Fees for most of the agency programs are moderate, with a sliding fee scale available. No one is refused treatment based upon ability to make payments. Some of the services, including the HIV services and CARE Program for adolescents involve no fee to the clients, if the person is assessed to be eligible for services.

Are Services Confidential?

Yes. All drug and alcohol treatment information is protected by federal confidentiality laws and can only be released with the written permission of the client, except when state law requires disclosure.

How Can I Involve Family/Friends in Treatment?

It is up to you and your counselor to discuss who will be involved in your treatment. However, all information about you will be kept confidential, except when state law requires disclosure (e.g., medical emergency).

How Will I Benefit From This Program?

You will receive quality services tailored to meet your individual needs. Certified and licensed professionals provide caring treatment in an established, licensed facility. Somerset Treatment Services provides various outpatient programs to address needs ranging from early drug and alcohol experimentation through chronic addiction, as well as HIV-related problems. By enrolling you in one of these services, we will make every effort to help you start on the road to recovery or start to address your HIV-related issues.
